Badger Watch

badgerJoin our trainee conservation officers for an evening of badger watching near to the Egleton Visitor Centre. Take this opportunity to view badgers close up, with additional chances of seeing owls in the early evening as they emerge to hunt. Meeting outside the Egleton Visitor Centre before settling into the badger watch hide.
£8 per person. Places are limited to 6 people per evening and booking is essential.
Days and times for this event may change weekly due to the changes in daylight.

NEW Thurs 29th July 9.30am-12.30pm This is a new monthly walk that we are putting on due to popular demand for more bird watching walks, as our walks with Terry Mitcham get fully booked so quickly. These walks are aimed at those new to birdwatching to look for the variety of species that visit the area and will be guided by one of our experienced wardens. The cost is £5 pp or £2.50 to Activity Pass holders. Meeting at Egleton. Booking essential. NB: In order to give more people a chance to engage on these walks, we will not accept block bookings for the year, but you may book up to two walks in advance.

This is the event of the year if you're into birds and wildlife. 3 days of packed programmes, events, celebrity lectures, exhibitions and trade stands, plus more. Family Fun Drop in Day

Tue 31st Aug; 10am-12pm or 1pm-3pm Fun for families with young children. No need to book, just turn up on the day. Meeting at Eglton. £3 per child.

Friday Birdwatching walks

Fri 24th September, 9.30-12.30 These walks are led by Terry Mitcham, the bird recorder of Rutland Natural History Society, and a very experienced birdwatcher. He regularly runs bird identification courses and has written several books. The cost is £5.00 per person or £2 with an Activity Pass or Explorer Permit..The walks with Terry are very popular and you are advised to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Fully Booked

Dry Stone Walling Course

Sat/Sun 25th-26th September 10am-4pm daily. This is a 2-day course to learn the skills of the ancient art of building dry stone walls, held under the supervision of an experienced Dry Stone Waller. Certificate on completion. These courses will be held on two further weekends during 2010, namely 12th-13th June and 25th-26th Setpember. RUTLAND BIRDS IN AUTUMN

A course of walks held on 4 separate days led by Terry Mitcham. These walks will visit various venues in the area to get the best opportunity of observing available wildfowl and waders. Course fee for all four sessions is £24 per person, or £12 concessions. Places are limited to 20. Early Booking is essential . Dates are as follows:

  1. Tues 28th Sept (7pm-9pm) An introductory session of slides at the Egleton Visitor Centre, showing many of the birds we hope to see, with information on identification and their occurance in Rutland.
  2. Sun 17th Oct (0.30am-12.30pm) Eyebrook Resevoir. Waders & wildfowl plus small birds & terns.
  3. Sun 21st Nov (9.30am-12.30pm) Fort Henry Ponds for wildfowl, birds of prey, woodpeckers, thrushes and finches.
  4. Sun 5th Dec (9.30am-12.30pm) Rutland Water at Elgeton for large numbers of wildfowl and waders, with scarce grebes and other possible migrants. Permit Fee payable.

OCTOBER

Painting & Drawing our countryside

Sat 16th and Sun 17th Oct Two day course led by reknowned bird and wildlife artist, Stephen Cale. Held at the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre at Egleton. Hedgelaying Course

Sat 4th -Sun 5th Dec. This is a two day course to learn the traditional method of hedge management that has been practiced for hundreds of years. Please wear suitable clothing and bring a packed lunch. There is a certificate for all participants who complete this course. This is a popular, well-attended course.
