Get more from your digital camera with photography tutor Pete Murray. Pete is offering three separate one day courses to help improve your picture taking skills.
Pete been a photography course tutor for over 20 years, and photographer for much longer than that! His main interests are plant and landscape photography, particularly capturing images of wild plants in their natural habitats. He leads botanical tours and runs a variety of practical photography workshops for beginners and more experienced photographers. He has been awarded RHS and AGS (artistic) gold medals for his photography.
COURSE 1: Introduction to Natural History Photography – Compact Cameras
A beginners course which will show you how to use your digital compact camera to take pictures of a range of natural history subjects. We will make the most of the seasonal interest in the Egleton Reserve as our photographic subjects, and in the practical sessions will show you how to take better pictures in a variety of situations. These include habitat pictures, portraits of plant and animal subjects in their natural settings, and you will learn how to capture close-up detail. At the end of the day is a summary and review session and we will provide summary hand-outs . The course is limited to 8 people to ensure you get the most from your day
Camera type: Compact camera users only (any type of compact camera is suitable)
Course type: Beginners – little or no experience in natural history photography

A beginners course which will show you how to use your digital SLR camera , or “Bridge Camera”(super zoom) to take pictures of a range of natural history subjects. We will make the most of the seasonal interest in the Egleton Reserve as our photographic subjects, and in the practical sessions will show you how to take better pictures in a variety of situations. These include habitat pictures, portraits of plant and animal subjects in their natural settings, and you will learn how to capture close-up detail. At the end of the day is a summary and review session and we will provide summary hand-outs . The course is limited to 8 people to ensure you get the most from your day
Camera type: SLR camera (you may have a choice of changeable lenses) ”Bridge camera” (super zoom) users only
Course type: Beginners – little or no experience in natural history photography

COURSE 3 : Introduction to Close-up Natural History- Bridge cameras (Superzooms) and SLR Cameras
This course shows you how to use your digital camera to take better close-up pictures of natural history subjects. You will begin with studio session to find out how to master composition, lighting and focus. We will then use these and other important close-up techniques in more demanding outdoor situations to take pictures of seasonal interest in the Egleton Reserve. A tripod is useful on this course, and SLR camera owners who have a choice of lenses can try these out .We will have the opportunity to advise on more specialist camera equipment that you may need for more specific natural history subjects. This course includes a review session and we provide summary hand-outs for the photographic sessions. The course is limited to 8 people to ensure you get the most from your day.

What To Bring:
To get the most from your course, please note the following:
Essentials
- You will need your own digital camera. Ensure it has fresh/fully charged batteries and a spare battery is recommended. Bring a charger if you use one.
- You will need your detailed camera instruction manual.
- Memory card – it is essential that you start the day with an empty, memory card. So save any images on the card onto your computer and delete the images on the card so it is completely empty.
- A bag for protecting your camera and equipment when we do our outdoor photography session(s).
Clothing
- Dress in warm, comfortable clothing for outdoor sessions. A waterproof/ windproof top is recommended and a hat and gloves will make you more comfortable.
- Strong outdoor footwear with good grip is necessary for our photography sessions in the reserve.
Optional
- Laptop – You are welcome to bring your own laptop to review pictures
- Lenses – If you have an SLR camera you may bring other lenses to try out.
- A notebook and pen/pencil will be useful but notes and summary hand-outs are provided.
REFRESHMENTS:
Coffee/Tea/Water/Squash will be available mid-morning, lunch and mid afternoon.
