White Storks spend the winter in tropical Africa, migrating north in April to breed in large numbers, particularly in Eastern Europe. In the north and west of the continent, numbers are reducing due it is thought to the widespread drainage of wetlands and intensification of agriculture. In the UK there are occasional accidental occurrences and this ringed bird of unknown origin appeared at the reserve for a couple of days in April 2002.
