Waders continued
Green Sandpipers pass through Rutland Water in early spring (January to April) and autumn ( mid-June to early November). One or two birds regularly overwinter here but most migrate to Africa.This bird may have been overwintering. It was pictured from Shoveler Hide on 8 December 2001.

These pictures of a Wood Sandpiper were taken by Andy Mackay from Heron hide on Sunday 5th August., 2001Small numbers of this scarce species of wader are seen in the eastern side of the country during during the spring and autumn migration. They generally breed in Scandinavia and spend the winter south of the Sahara. Peak sightings at Rutland Water usually occur in August.

This Common Sandpiper was pictured on 23/8/01 at Lapwing hide by Tim Caldicott. A key identification feature is the white patch between the breast patch and the wing.

Turnstone are abundant on the coasts but are very scarce inland. At Rutland Water they occur in small numbers as migrants in spring and summer. The one on the left in adult summer plumage was pictured in North Arm on 5/5/02. The one on the right is a juvenile and was one of a group of four seen in North Arm 11/8/02.![]()
