Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia
Richard Fray was at Rutland Water on Saturday evening (June 9th 2001) and recorded these shots of a first-summer Spoonbill.Richard says:
It was surprisingly difficult to find for such a huge, obvious white thing! I eventually found it on Lagoon III, but only after 3/4 of an hour of sitting in Shoveler hide! I was packing up, having given up any hope of seeing it, when it walked out from behind the long thin island. What else must be lurking around if we can't see Spoonbills? The pictures were taken with my Sony PC4 camcorder at 10x, through a Kowa TS611 scope at 20x.
It was great to get out to Egleton again - and I had the entire reserve to myself that evening! I could have sat quietly in Plover hide for ever...
