Above is an adult Little Ringed Plover, pictured on 21 April 2002 in front of Ternhide. The yellow eye-ring (separating it from the Ringed Plover) can be clearly seen. Several pairs breed each year at Rutland Water.
Below is a juvenile pictured on 24th July 2001 in front of Gadwall hide. The juveniles have a pale forehead, unlike the black band of the adults.

Ringed Plovers breed very rarely at Rutland Water, but are uncommon passage migrants. The maximum number recorded was 63 in September 1998. The adult on the left , was pictured near Manton Bridge on 9 March 2002. As well as the lack of yellow eye-ring, they can be separted from Little Ringed Plovers (see picture above) by the larger amount of yellow on the bill. On the right is a juvenile, seen on 3 September 2002.

Grey Plovers are scarce passage migrants and also occur in winter at Rutland Water. The one on the left on 28 August 2003 is still, mainly, in summer plumage. The one on the right, was photographed in the south arm of the reservoir on 24 September 2002 and is a juvemile or adult in winter pluamge.
