INTREPID EXPLORERS

Tuesday 9th April saw a group of intrepid children visit the nature reserve for our first Easter Explorers Day. We started off with a ringing demonstration from Martin the Warden who showed us male and female Great Tits and then a male Reed Bunting. It was amazing to see the birds so close and find out how we keep track of where the birds spend their time.

Back at the centre we had a quick snack and then set to making some tasty treats for the birds. Our pine cone feeders are easy to make and very popular with lots of garden birds, especially Blue Tits and Great Tits. We then set the Explorers a challenge and asked them to try and identify some birds' nests in out game, Whose Nest is it Anyway?. Our teams did very well in identifying nests from Wrens, Song Thrushes, Chaffinches, Blackbirds and Reed Buntings. Two teams did very well and scored a perfect 5 - the Blue Explorers and The Wierdos!

We finished up the activity with a visit to the woodland hides and Shoveler Hide to see what we could find on the Nature Reserve. Next weeks Easter Explorer is now full, but we will be running Spring Explorers in May Half Term and Nature Detectives in July and August. There will be details on the Holiday Activities page shortly.
